How to run a Secret Santa draw
- Enter the participants, one name per line. You can have 3 to 100 people.
- Add couples, family members or anyone else who should not draw each other under Pairs who must not draw each other.
- Add a gift budget, exchange date and a note if you like, then press Draw names.
- Send each person their own private link. When they open it and tap the gift, they see who they are buying for, along with the budget and date.
Keep the organizer in the dark too
The result list shows only names and link buttons, never who drew whom. If you copy or send the links without opening them, you can take part as a participant without knowing anyone's match. Names you have copied or sent are marked Sent so nobody gets missed. If you are not taking part, Show all pairs lets you check the full draw.
How the links work
The draw is stored in each link after the # sign, not on a server. Browsers never send the part after # to the website, so SpinPick's server never sees names or results. Each link carries only one person's match, so whoever receives it cannot learn anyone else's.
The data in a link is scrambled so it cannot be read at a glance, but it is not encrypted. An organizer who has every link, or anyone who receives a link, could decode it with some effort. That is the trade-off of working without a server, so ask everyone to open only their own link.
How the names are drawn
Everyone draws exactly one person who is not themselves, and everyone is drawn exactly once (mathematicians call this a derangement). The order is shuffled with your browser's crypto.getRandomValues and reshuffled until it meets every rule: nobody draws themselves, excluded pairs, and optionally no two people drawing each other. That makes every valid draw equally likely. If 20,000 shuffles still fail because there are many exclusions, a search finds a valid draw instead, and if the rules make a draw impossible, the tool tells you why.
Tips for a fun gift exchange
- Set a budget so nobody feels awkward about price differences.
- Ask everyone to post one gift hint in the group chat.
- The game has many names: Secret Santa in English, amigo invisible in Spanish, and manito (마니또) in Korean.
